What is Media Training?
Media Training is one or a series of dynamic courses designed to teach successful individuals how to communicate effectively to the media. Ultimately, the media benefits by getting a better story. The individual benefits by more clearly communicating his or her most important points to the reporter. back to top...

Who benefits from Media Training?
Everyone. With Media Training, great speakers become dynamic communicators. Novice communicators become players in the communications field. back to top...

If I am already a good public speaker do I still need to take Media Training?
Yes. There are countless speakers who can motivate a work force or inspire the masses through eloquent oration. But the communicator of today must be able to motivate and inspire the masses through a single quote or soundbite of six to twelve words lasting only six to twelve seconds. If you speak too long when talking to the media, they will edit your quote or soundbite at their own discretion and your most valuable words may be left on a cutting room floor. back to top...

What is the monetary value of Media Training?
A single report in the media can make or break a business. A positive news report can result in a business being overwhelmed with new customers and record sales. So the value of a single Media Training course could mean tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars to you and your company. back to top...

What does a Media Training course involve?
Media Training includes four key elements: 1) viewing, 2) lecture, 3) repeated role playing, and 4) repeated evaluation.

  1. Viewing involves watching video tapes and reading written news reports which compare good spokespeople to bad spokespeople and the effects of their comments.

  2. The lecture teaches you the behind the scenes workings of the modern news organization. By better understanding the media's needs and deadlines you are better able to insure you get to say what you want, while providing the media with the information they want.

  3. Role playing begins in a friendly environment in a private television studio to familiarize you with basic tools and techniques during a mock television interview. As the day progresses, the level of questioning during interviews intensifies, putting even the best speaker to the test beneath the hot lights while sitting in the hot seat.

  4. Evaluation is done in a friendly manner to focus on areas of improvement. The ability to laugh at oneself is always important, as there are always light moments during the course. However, the key to evaluation is to learn from success and mistakes as you strive for perfection as a media spokesperson. back to top...

Does Media Training teach me what to say or how to say it?
A key to successful communications is to limit your comments to a few well chosen key messages. Media Training teaches you to accurately define those key messages and how to successfully articulate them. back to top...

Will Media Training help me in areas other than in dealing directly with the media?
Once you have mastered the techniques of Media Training, you will also find them valuable in dealing with co-workers, business associates, public forums and when dealing with competitors or extremist opposition groups. back to top...

Is once enough?
Once is better than never. But Media Training should be viewed as any learned skill or sport. The more you use that skill, the better you get. Just as Tiger Woods didn't make it to the Masters with a single golf lesson, a spokesperson should not expect to master the art of talking with the media through a single course. Most spokespeople should consider taking an annual refresher course with a private consultant, or they should consider enrolling in a more advanced level of training. back to top...

How long does a Media Training class last?
Classes can be customized for one full-day, two half-days or two full-days, depending upon your needs and the size of your class. back to top...
